Alibaba-Backed DeepRoute.ai Says More Than 300,000 Cars Now Use Its Assisted-Driving System Across Chines

Alibaba-backed autonomous driving company DeepRoute.ai announced that more than 300,000 vehicles are now using its assisted driving technology, a milestone that positions the Chinese firm as a serious competitor in the global race to deploy self-driving capabilities on public roads.
The 300,000-vehicle figure represents a significant jump from the 100,000 vehicles the company reported just eight months ago, reflecting the accelerating pace of adoption in China's domestic market. DeepRoute.ai's technology operates at Level 2+ — meaning it can handle highway driving, lane changes, and some urban navigation but requires human supervision and intervention.

The company, which has raised over $1 billion in funding including significant investment from Alibaba, emphasizes that its approach differs from competitors like Waymo and Cruise by focusing on consumer vehicles rather than robotaxis. DeepRoute.ai's software is integrated into vehicles manufactured by Dongfeng Motor, one of China's largest automakers, giving it a built-in distribution channel that Western competitors lack.
The announcement comes amid an intensifying geopolitical dimension to autonomous driving. U.S. restrictions on Chinese technology companies have limited DeepRoute.ai's ability to expand into Western markets, while Chinese regulators have created a more permissive testing environment for domestic autonomous vehicle companies than exists in most Western countries.
Safety data remains a point of contention. DeepRoute.ai reports that its system has accumulated over 200 million kilometers of driving data with a disengagement rate lower than some competitors, but independent verification is limited by China's relatively opaque reporting requirements for autonomous vehicle testing.
What This Means For You: If you're in the market for a new car and interested in advanced driver assistance, the DeepRoute.ai milestone is a signal that Level 2+ capabilities are becoming a commodity feature rather than a luxury add-on. Expect more vehicles at lower price points to offer highway-autonomous features within the next 12-18 months. If you're an investor, the autonomous driving space is fragmenting along geopolitical lines — Chinese companies are pulling ahead in deployment volume while U.S. companies maintain advantages in deep urban autonomy. If you work in logistics or fleet management, the 300,000-vehicle deployment suggests that Level 2+ driver assistance is ready for commercial adoption now, with Level 4 robotaxis still years away from widespread viability.
