Major Russian Attack on Ukraine Kills Four, Wounds Dozens

Russia launched one of its largest barrages of the war overnight, deploying more than 660 drones and missiles across Ukraine in an assault that killed at least four people and wounded more than 30.

The city of Dnipro in southeastern Ukraine bore the brunt of the attack. Two bodies were recovered from a building struck by a Russian missile, with regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha warning that five more people could still be trapped beneath the rubble. Twenty-one others were wounded in the city.

In the northern Chernihiv region, separate drone and missile strikes killed two people and injured seven more, according to the regional governor.

Ukraine's air force reported that Russia fired 619 drones and 47 missiles during the overnight assault. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 580 drones and 30 missiles — an interception rate of roughly 94% for drones and 64% for missiles, but still leaving enough leakers to cause significant damage to urban infrastructure.

"Practically all night, the Russians bombed Dnipro and our other cities and communities," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy wrote on social media. He used the attack to repeat his call for strengthened air defenses: "Every strike like this must remind our partners that the situation needs immediate and firm action."

Russia has maintained a pattern of smaller nightly drone barrages — typically dozens at a time — interspersed with occasional massive strikes employing hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles. This latest assault fits the pattern of escalation, coming amid broader geopolitical tensions including the Iran conflict that has stretched Western military resources.

What This Means For You: The war in Ukraine continues to strain global resources and NATO allies' military stockpiles, which are also being drawn down by the parallel Iran conflict. For Americans, the convergence of two major conflicts means continued pressure on defense spending, energy markets, and food prices. The call for strengthened air defenses also signals that Western military aid remains a critical variable — policy shifts in Washington directly affect Ukraine's ability to intercept these barrages.
